What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse refers to loss of the connective tissue and ligaments that support the pelvic floor. This loss of support can lead to the uterus, bladder and/or bowel descending from the normal anatomic position towards or through the vaginal opening. Pelvic organ prolapse can severely impact a woman’s quality of life.

Types of pelvic organ prolapse include:

  • Cystocele – bladder prolapse
  • Rectocele – bulge posterior vaginal wall
  • Uterine prolapse – cervix and uterus
  • Rectal prolapse – rectum pushes through anus
  • Vaginal prolapse – top of the vagina falls down

Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Symptoms vary on which organ is affected and may worsen when active or as the day progresses. Women with prolapse will not all experience the same symptoms. In fact, some women don’t have any symptoms, but when symptoms are noticeable, they may include:

  1. Bulging or heavy feeling in the vagina
  2. Discomfort, pressure, or feeling of fullness in the pelvis, lower abdomen, groin, or lower back
  3. Constipation or loss of bowel control
  4. Urinary urgency with or without leakage
  5. Inability to completely empty the bladder
  6. Urinary frequency
  7. Frequent urinary tract infections
  8. Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  9. Painful intercourse

Treatment Options for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

  • Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Specific exercises that are designed to strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor.

  • Estrogen Therapy

Estrogen can sometimes help the vaginal tissue be more resilient.

  • Pessary

Removable silicone vaginal devices that can be used to support the vagina and organs in the pelvis.

  • Surgery

Every patient is different, therefore an exam is required to determine the right surgery for an optimal outcome. Pelvic floor reconstructive surgeries can be done through the vagina or laparoscopically through (small incisions) in the abdomen.
